The Audi R8 LMS GT3 evo II Comes to Project Motor Racing

August 11, 2025

A Legacy of Performance

Since its introduction in 2009, few names in GT3 racing have risen to command as much respect as Audi’s R8 LMS series. A mainstay in endurance racing and sprint championships, the Audi R8 has built a reputation for being one of the most balanced and competitive GT3 cars ever developed. 322 titles across the world from 2009 to 2024 bears testament to that.

In 2022, Audi introduced the R8 LMS GT3 evo II, a refined and enhanced version of its successful predecessor, the evo. This upgrade wasn’t just a minor refresh—it was a calculated evolution aimed at extending the car’s dominance in global GT3 competition.

The focus was on refining four key aspects of what was already a dominant package: aerodynamics, engine characteristics, suspension, and traction control.

And that car—rumoured to be the final evolution of the mythical Audi GT3 program—is what you’ll be running in Project Motor Racing.

Key Upgrades on the evo II

The evo II package brought a host of technical refinements aimed at improving both performance and accessibility for professional and amateur drivers. Audi Sport understood that success in modern GT3 racing isn’t just about outright pace—it’s about a platform that remains predictable and stable across different tracks and conditions.

One of the most obvious visual changes was the introduction of a larger rear wing with new mounting points, optimizing airflow over the car and increasing stability at high speeds. The revised aerodynamic package also included updates to the front splitter and underbody, providing better balance between front and rear downforce. These changes helped the car maintain higher cornering speeds alongside improved tyre longevity—crucial for endurance race dominance.

Audi also revised the suspension system for the evo II, particularly focusing on the rear axle. The new four-way adjustable dampers make the car more forgiving for gentleman drivers, while also giving pro drivers greater control over weight transfer and mechanical grip.

Additionally, traction control and ABS calibration were improved, further refining the evo II ability to remain planted under heavy braking and acceleration. This is particularly noticeable in wet conditions where the evo II showcases its predictable handling compared to some of its more aggressive competitors.

The 5.2L naturally aspirated V10 remained largely unchanged in terms of power output, maintaining approximately 585 horsepower—depending on Balance of Performance (BoP) restrictions per championship. However, Audi did introduce a revised air intake system that improved efficiency, especially in hot conditions.

Audi also refined the traction control and ABS systems on the evo II to make them more adaptable to different driving styles.

An upgraded steering wheel offered more functionality coupled with better ergonomics. An the new integrated air conditioning enhanced the comfort.

On-Track Performance and Competitive Standing

The 2022 Audi R8 LMS GT3 evo II debuted in multiple top-tier GT3 championships and quickly gained a reputation for its versatility. Whether on high-speed circuits, technical tracks like the Nürburgring GP layout, or street courses, the Audi R8 evo II demonstrated both reliability and predictable, strong race pace.

One of its greatest strengths was long-run consistency—the evo II was easier on tyres than some of its turbocharged rivals, meaning it could maintain competitive lap times deeper into a stint.

A Car Built for the Future

Despite the decision by Audi to withdraw from a factory-backed GT3 racing program after 2023, the R8 LMS GT3 evo II remains a popular choice for customer racing teams. Its combination of reliability, driveability, and high-level performance ensures that privateer teams continue to field the evo II in championships around the world.

The R8 LMS GT3 evo II is now rumoured to be the final evolution of the Audi GT3 program, as the road-going Audi R8 has reached the end of its production cycle. However, its impact on modern GT3 racing is undeniable. From sprint races to endurance marathons, the evo II cemented the Audi R8 race car’s place as one of the most dominant and accessible GT3 machines ever built.

It’s waiting for you in Project Motor Racing.
