The Mid-Engined Champ

The 2022 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2 represents the most refined version yet of Lamborghini’s multi-championship-winning customer race car. Revealed in mid-2022, the Evo2 drew heavily from the Huracán STO road car while evolving the foundation of what is one of the most dominant GT3 runners of the modern era, the 2019 GT3 Evo.

Under the Hood

At the heart of the Huracán GT3 Evo2 lies Lamborghini’s 5.2L naturally aspirated V10, a powerplant that has become a hallmark of the Huracán racing program. In Evo2 form, the V10 retains its compression ratio of 12.7:1 for a BoP-mandated 580bhp. It also retains the qualities that make this engine a standout in world motorsport, with a linear torque curve alongside a visceral soundtrack that is instantly distinguishable amidst turbocharged rivals.

Like all GT3 cars, the Huracán GT3 Evo2 also features driver aids such as adjustable traction control and ABS tuned for competition use. These systems have multiple settings accessible on the steering wheel, allowing drivers to fine-tune grip levels for different conditions.

The V10 is mounted mid-rear, giving a balanced weight distribution of around 42/58. This layout contributes enormously to the Evo2’s lively handling characteristics, particularly on low fuel runs.

Advanced Aero

The Evo2’s bold aerodynamic redesign—crafted by Squadra Corse, in collaboration with the Centro Stile design team—features a revised front splitter, larger rear diffuser, and “swan-neck” mounted rear wing for a significant increase in downforce over the previous Evo model. This increased aero package enhances grip as well as mid-turn stability, unlocking better cornering speeds while maintaining the sharp, angular motif that is in the DNA of Lamborghini.

A Singular Racing Pedigree

Lamborghini’s Huracán GT3 program has carved out a fearsome reputation since its introduction in 2015, and the Evo2 has done nothing but enhance that legacy. Earlier generations of the Huracán GT3 had accumulated more than 40 international titles in 6 seasons before the Evo2 came on the scene.

By 2025, that number has climbed to 96 championship titles and 187 race victories, a testament to the Evo2’s achievements and competitiveness. It’s also an indication, if any were needed, that the Huracán GT3 Evo2 is one of the most decorated (and fan-celebrated) GT3 cars of the modern era.

To begin with, the mid-engine layout provides a platform that rewards committed drivers. Mated to its inborn aerodynamic downforce and stability, the responsive V10, and its excellent high-speed grip, this is a GT3 that will be in the hunt for wins no matter what the track—fast or technical.

And then there’s that naturally aspirated V10 that provides instant throttle response and a wide, linear powerband, making it both predictable and sublimely driveable on the throttle. Unlike its turbo rivals, there’s no sudden spike in torque. And while the sound of that V10 screaming at full throttle delivers an unmistakable, high-revving soundtrack that defines the Lamborghini experience hasn’t been scientifically proven to give any performance gains, it is an emotional connection that defines the Huracán GT3 Evo2—raw, immersive, unforgettable.

The non-turbo does come with a few challenges. On tracks that rely on raw torque out of hairpins, particularly at high altitude locations, the naturally aspirated engine may need to be optimised (think gear ratios) to match turbo rivals.

Another well-known drawback to mid-engined machines is front tyre wear. The platform may exhibit front-biased balance under certain conditions, which can result in scrubbed front tyres. This can be mitigated through setup refinement. Over long stints, this can become a real challenge to manage. For seasoned drivers, setting the car up for oversteer is a solution, but beware—managing rear-end balance on worn tyres demands precision and is a challenge that needs attention. Five hundred-plus bhp on old tyres can be a handful!
