The 2004 Morgan Aero 8 Comes to Project Motor Racing
April 23, 2025
In the early 2000s, the Morgan Motor Company, renowned for its classic British sports cars, embarked on an ambitious journey into the realm of endurance racing with the introduction of the “Aero 8 GTN”. This endeavour marked a significant evolution for the marque, blending its storied craftsmanship with modern engineering to go toe-to-toe in one of the most engaging and competitive endurance series in international motorsport—N-GT.
Design and Engineering
The Aero 8 retained much of Morgan’s iconic aesthetic, characterized by its flowing lines and distinctive profile. The car’s shape was first unveiled at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, marking Morgan Motor Company's first new design since 1964.
However, beneath this classic exterior lay a thoroughly modern machine designed for the rigours of endurance racing. The vehicle featured an aluminium chassis—a departure from Morgan's traditional construction methods—which contributed to a lightweight structure weighing approximately 1,000 kg. This emphasis on weight reduction was crucial for enhancing agility and performance on the track.
The traditional construction did feature the use of wood framing, which remains a distinctive and celebrated feature of their construction. Specifically, Morgan utilize English ash wood to craft the body frame of each vehicle. This material is lightweight, durable, and flexible, making it ideal for automotive applications. It also creates cars that have a unique balance and poise.
This blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering not only showcases Morgan's commitment to quality but also provides a unique driving experience that has captivated enthusiasts for decades.
Powertrain and Performance
At the heart of the Aero 8 GTN was a 4.4L, Mader-tuned BMW M62 V8 engine. This powerplant delivered over 500 bhp at 6,900 rpm, providing the car with formidable acceleration and top-end speed. The engine was paired with a 6-speed sequential gearbox, ensuring precise and rapid gear changes essential for competitive racing.
It also sounded the business.
Racing Pedigree
Morgan's foray into endurance racing with the Aero 8 GTN was marked by participation in several high-profile events. The car made its debut at the 2002 24 Hours of Le Mans and competed in the British GT Series under the private team Race Sports Salisbury (RSS), with technical support from the Morgan Motor Company. Competing against formidable rivals like Porsche and Ferrari, the Aero 8 GTN’s participation in endurance racing demonstrated Morgan's dedication to evolving its brand while staying true to its heritage.
The lessons learned from the N-GT’s development and competition informed subsequent models, bridging the gap between Morgan's classic designs and modern performance expectations. This endeavour not only enhanced Morgan's engineering capabilities but also reinforced its reputation among enthusiasts and within the racing community.
